We all know that excessive winter rain on the Heaphy has highlighted problems with some of the less-well constructed track on either side of the Lewis Hut. DOC has a schedule of works which predated the MTB trial to upgrade (read: rebuild) these older bits of track in the Heaphy River Valley. DOC also approached the MTBNZ Land Access Committee to help with projected costs required to get the MacKay Hill section up to scratch - the result is that the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, Avanti, WH Worrall (GT & SRAM), Ground Effect, Hyperformance Hardware (Santa Cruz) and PRV (Schwalbe tyres) have dug deep and donated $10,000 to help DOC rebuild that 3.5km of track on the Mackay Hill. The Nelson MTB Club's part of this donation is $5000. This money will be used to pay for the materials needed to get the MacKay Hill part of the Heaphy sorted for next MTB season, with DOC covering the cost of labour. The NMTBC Committee believe this is a great investment in the future, and while it doesn't gaurantee access beyond the three year trial period (at this stage), it delivers some serious brownie points for the MTB Community with DOC. Most Nelson MTB Club members will at some stage ride this great track (or should plan to!), so this donation fits well with our strategic focus on trail development and access. We'll keep you updated on how the upgrade goes.Posted by Chris Mildon on 23/ 7 / 11; 1:11:11 AM Discuss |
