Club social rides
GBMTB Club social rides provide an opportunity for current and potential new members to meet on a regular basis for a MTB ride locally.
The social rides are a great opportunity to meet with other local riders with the aim of getting to know each other and to have a good time while riding local trails. A ride leader will be nominated for each ride and riders ride at their own pace, with regular opportunities for the group as a whole to 're-group' before tackling the next section of trail. This is NOT a race.
Rides will be run winter (night riding lights will be required) and summer, wet or fine. E-bikes are welcome.
Ride duration will be 1.5 to 2 hours on local grade 2-4 trails and will cover distances of between 10 to 20km (depending on the terrain). The ride will be followed by post-ride refreshments (and meal if people choose to stay) at a local restaurant / bar.
Social rides are open to riders of all ages who can comfortably ride grade 3+ trails. Riders will meet at Takaka iSite at 5:30pm Thursday evening. From there transport will be arranged to the trail head. Riders should arrange their own transport to and from to and from the Takaka iSite.
There is no cost for joining the rides. The rides are open to current financial GBMTB members. Non-members are welcome to join for three social rides before becoming financial members of the GBMTBC. Riders are responsible for paying for their own post-ride refreshments.
Summer rides
Club social rides are taking on a different format over the summer. We will now be organising one or two rides each month. One of the rides will be scheduled for a Sunday and will take up most of the day. The club will make use of the club trailers to transport riders from GB to ride destinations over the hill so we can enjoy a change of scenery. To join us on these rides you must be a club member (potential members are welcome to join us on the first couple of rides before needing to sign up as a club member). Each rider will need to pay a koha of $10 to cover fuel costs.
For more information check out the calendar on the club website, the Golden Bay Mountain Bike club Facebook page or ask to be added to the GBMTBC WhatsApp social rides chat.
Social Ride news - October 13th
After an ominous looking weather forecast, the group size shrunk from eight to four hardy riders setting out from Fresh Choice carpark to Kaiteriteri. Daphne took on the role as ride leader as the rest of us hadn’t ridden in the park for quite a while. First up we reacquainted ourselves with tracks on the east side of the park riding loops, before doing one shuttle run to the top of the park and bombing down into Kaiteriteri itself. Despite some dark looking clouds we managed to stay nice and dry throughout. Everyone had a great day and enjoyed riding these fun tracks again.
Social Rides news - JULY 23
The social rides have been going well with some new members joining the group. Although rides numbers have dropped off a litte (due to the cold weather) most of the rides have still gone ahead, and participation at the rides have mostly been from our female members (is it too cold for the men)?? This must be a first for any MTB club in NZ. The GBMTBC Committee is always keen to hear about ideas for new areas to hold rides in (so long as the Club has full permission from the landowners for us to pass through their land), so if you have any suggestions please forward them to Karen Le Sueur. Over the last month Karen and Mel have been doing some reconnaissance at Aorere Goldfields this trail ride as well in the wet and the dry.
GBMTBC WhatsApp group
The club has set up a WhatsApp group for the Club Social rides called GBMTBC Social Ride Group. This group is open to all GBMTBC members with a purpose of:
Share ideas about suggestions for new locations for club social rides (so long as it does not involve any 'illegal' riding)
Organise rides other than club scheduled rides and away trips.
Organise transport to club social rides.
Post photos from club social rides.
Provide a platform to share ideas with other members about anything to do with Mountain biking.
If you would like to be added to this chat group send a text message to Karen Le Sueur on Ph 021 2473353 stating please add me to the GBMTBC social ride chat along with your name.
